The Fragrant Soother
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a beautiful and stately perennial native to temperate regions in Europe, Asia and North America. It can grow up to 7 feet tall on hearty stalks with lacy pinkish white flowers that bloom in summer. Most of these characteristics get overshadowed by its root, the pungent, some would say quite stinky, part of the plant that is more well known.
The fragrant Valerian Root has a long history of use for normalizing or keeping the nervous system in balance. In many traditional practices, it has had a reputation for supporting relaxation for the occasionally anxious, and stimulation for the sluggish mind or nervous system.
