The Soothing Flower
Lavender (Lavendula augustifolia) also known as English Lavender, is a fragrant, flowering herb native to the Mediterranean region. Known for its vibrant purple flowers and distinct, sweet scent, lavender is familiar and beloved in gardens all over the world. Like other members of its Lamiaceae, or mint family, Lavender sports square stems and silvery green leaves with tiny hairs, its flowers in varying shades of pinkish white, purple or blue. Lavender grows in a somewhat round, shrubby form, with narrow, silver-green leaves ending in spiky flower clusters. It prefers well drained soil in sunny, dry climates.

The fragrant volatile oil in lavender is also a natural disinfectant, finding its way into household cleaning products, sachets, candles and even insect repellants.
As an herb, Lavender is both floral and bitter giving it a unique function in herbal preparations. Like other members of the mint family, Lavender is often used in tea blends supporting the digestive system. It is also believed to have beneficial effects on the nerves, relaxing properties, that make it an ideal ingredient in bath soaks, herbal steams and bedtime teas. Lavender is even gentle enough for children.
