Greater Celandine (Chelidonium majus) is a perennial herb with a wide geographical native range extending across Europe, Russia and Asia, and including the Mediterranean and North African regions. It is also commonly known as Greater Celandine and can reach a height of almost 3 feet. It has relatively large 3-lobed leaves that are dark green with a lighter, bluish green underside. Celandine blooms from spring to fall with bright yellow 4 petaled flowers.
Celandine has been a popular herb in European traditions for centuries, both medicinally and for magical purposes. It was often used in ointments and topical preparations for warts and other skin issues as well as to award off spells afflicting children or possessed persons. The Alchemists believed that the latex exuded by Celandine was representative of the four elements, and crucial for locating the Philosopher’s Stone.
In modern herbalism, Celandine is often used as a mild sedative or anodyne for pain. It is also commonly used to support healthy liver, gallbladder and digestive function. It has a very bitter taste and pungent odor.
Safety Precautions: Not for use in cases of liver or gallbladder disease. Not for long term use. We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications.
