Isla's story begins after Georg Heinrich Engelhard passed on his Rosen Apotheke, founded in Frankfurt in 1826, to his son. Karl Philipp Engelhard did not continue the pharmacy, but he maintained the idea of wanting to do something good for the well-being of the community and he developed an original recipe for a paste made from Icelandic moss. As the cornerstone of Isla, Islamoos is not only one of their most successful products but it also helped their small family business become an international company.
