Warming & Stimulating
Ginger (Zingiber officinalis) is a plant in the Zingiberaceae family that is native to southeast Asia and is grown in tropical climates around the world. It’s a reedy, leafy perennial that grows up to 2 feet, shooting up a tall flower stem in the spring. The yellow or white flower grows from a scallopy spike on the tip of the stem that looks a bit like a small pink pineapple. The root system grows from a fleshy rhizome, which is the part of the plant commonly used in culinary and medicinal practices. Ginger is a warming and stimulating herb, supporting the immune system, circulatory system and digestion. Certain volatile oils contained in Ginger root are believed to have soothing, anti-spasmotic effects that can help ease occasional pain and nausea related to pregnancy and menstruation, common indigestion or travel sickness. Dried Ginger root can be used to make syrups, decocted for a warm and spicy tea, tinctured or ground for use in topical or culinary applications.
