How To Make Your Shaving Routine Sustainable & Eco-Friendly

How To Make Your Shaving Routine Sustainable & Eco-Friendly

April is Earth Month and it’s the perfect time to find sustainable swaps for your self-care routines. One that’s often forgotten? Your shaving routine. With a few sustainable swaps, you can upgrade your grooming habits while supporting a more zero waste, plastic free lifestyle.

Our shaving & grooming specialist, Garrett, combed through our assortment of shaving tools, grooming products and self-care finds to share the best eco-friendly options with you. Whether you're new to low waste shaving or simply looking to refresh your setup, here’s how to create a sustainable shaving routine without compromising comfort or quality.

Sustainable Razors For A Plastic-Free Shaving Routine

Getting a close and comfortable shave starts with choosing the right razor. All D.E. (Double Edge) Safety Razors are environmentally friendly. They’re built to last and are recyclable. Whereas most drugstore cartridge razors are thrown out after a short time and end up in landfills. D.E. razor blades are not infused with plastic like disposable razors, so you can recycle them instead of throwing them out. We have a large selection of sustainable Double Edge Safety Razors, but the best one for you will depend on how and where you plan to use it.

Best Sustainable Razors For Body & Head Shavers

If you are a body shaver or a head shaver, it's important to find a razor with a longer handle and a razor that has a comfortable weight for you. My top recommended razors for body and head shaving would be:

-Merkur 20B

-Muhle Companion

-Henson Razor

The best eco-friendly razor for body shaving is the Leaf Razor. It’s reminiscent of a cartridge razor, which is familiar to most beginners, but it has the added benefit of using recyclable blades. You simply snap the blades in half, load them on the magnetic slots, and it’s ready to go. Leaf is dedicated to sustainable practices, so it’s an ideal choice for the environmentally conscious.

Best Sustainable Razors For Face Shaving

For people shaving just their face, most DE razors will work for you. There is a bit of a learning curve if you’re coming from using a drugstore cartridge razor. If you are worried about loading the razors, check out my personal recommendations focused on ease of use:

-Parker Butterfly Safety Razors

-Merkur 34C

-Leaf Twig Single Edge Razor

Eco-Friendly Razor Blades

Some razor blades do come in plastic packages that contain a slot to dispose of used blades. This can be very helpful, but if you are trying to keep your grooming routine plastic-free there are still lots of options for you. Instead opt for blades that are packaged in paper. My favorite low-waste razor blade brands are:

How To Recycle Razor Blades Sustainably

Now when it comes to recycling the razor blades, the best method would be to have a

razor bank. A razor bank is a small container used to safely and securely hold used razor blades. A few environmentally friendly options are the Leaf Razor Bank or the Rockwell Razor Bank. They’re both easy to use. You just drop your used razor blades inside.

Simply drop your used blades inside, then seal and label the container when it’s full. You can take it to a local recycling center for proper disposal.

Want to go even more zero waste? Make your own DIY razor bank at home using a recyclable container. Something like an Altoids tin would work well too!

Low-Waste Shaving & Grooming Essentials

Making the switch to a sustainable shaving soap is very easy. Most shaving soaps we sell, like D.R. Harris, come in both a bowl option and a refill option. You can start with buying the bowl version and order the soap refill once you’ve used it up to help reduce plastic waste. If you already have a container, just get the refill version on its own. Pair your soap with a quality shaving brush so you can build an amazing lather for a comfortable and sustainable shave!

There are so many shaving and grooming options out there. It can be easy to get overwhelmed about what’s best for you and the planet. As you’re exploring brands and products to build your environmentally friendly shaving set up, check out brands that are Climate Neutral and Plastic Recovery Program certified.
